Team Liberty Race Recap: Sonoma Nationals
SONOMA, Calif. (July 30, 2017) – Dedicated Mello Yello Drag Racing fans were able to watch the Team Liberty Racing duo of Cory Reed and Angelle Sampey take on the competition at the 30th annual NHRA Sonoma Nationals today at Sonoma Raceway.
Cory Reed came into raceday in the No. 15 spot and had a first round matchup against Hector Arana Jr. Angelle Sampey qualified No. 13 and that gave her a first round drawing of Jerry Savoie.
In Sampey’s first round, the three-time Pro Stock Motorcycle World Champion blistered off the starting line with a .026-seconds advantage over Savoie. Sampey powered down Sonoma Raceway and clocked in with a 6.839-second pass at 194.46 mph – the fastest elapsed time for Team Liberty Racing in 2017. Although she posted the teams best e.t. of the season, Savoie's 6.752, 198.99 advanced to the second round.
For Reed’s matchup, his PSE/Team Liberty Racing Victory Magnum Pro Stock Motorcycle suffered extensive engine damage. Not knowing the engine was hurt, Reed hunkered down and ran it out to hopefully come away with the win. He clocked in with a 6.974, 186.10 but was unable to outrun Arana Jr.’s 6.749, 199.52.

“Going down the track, it would vibrate real hard and then when I would shift it, it would even out,” Reed said. “I’m disappointed with my .076 light in the first round; I don’t usually get lights like that. Our team will regroup and keep chipping away at it before Brainerd.”

“I’ve actually never been happier after I lost a first round,” Sampey said. “That’s our best elapsed time for our team and it felt so good. It picked up the tire and it went perfectly straight. I had a decent light; I was trying for a .015 light but I had a .039, which was the second-best light in that round so I can’t be too mad about that. I am just really proud because we are doing all of this without a dyno. We are coming out here every weekend and the racetrack is our dyno. I think with all that considering, we’re doing really well.”
